Another Way E-Books Are Better

This may have happened for other Kindle readers, but it’s a first for me. Today I got an email from Amazon customer service telling me there was a revised version of Craig Ferguson’s American on Purpose: The Improbable Adventures of an Unlikely Patriot. Since I owned an earlier version, I was eligible to receive this revised version if I wanted it. The only reason I could see why you might not want to is that you would lose any highlights/annotations from the previous version. Here’s the main body of the email:

We’re writing about your past Kindle purchase of American on Purpose: The Improbable Adventures of an Unlikely Patriot by Craig Ferguson. The version you received contained some errors that have been corrected.

An updated version of American on Purpose: The Improbable Adventures of an Unlikely Patriot (ASIN:B002OMZTSU) is now available. It’s important to note that when we send you the updated version, you will no longer be able to view any highlights, bookmarks, and notes made in your current version and your furthest reading location will be lost.

If you wish to receive the updated version, please reply to this email with the word “Yes” in the first line of your response. Within 2 hours of receiving the e-mail any device that has the title currently downloaded will be updated automatically if the wireless is on.

So I went ahead and hit “Reply” and added the specified “Yes” at the top of the email, clicked “Send”. However, I did not have my WiFi turned on, and when I finally got around to checking it this evening there was nothing there. Then I reread the email more closely and saw that part about, “Within 2 hours of receiving the e-mail any device that has the title currently downloaded will be updated automatically if the wireless is on.” So now I’ve loaded the original version from my archive, left the WiFi on, and have re-replied to the email. I’ll append something here once the final results are in….

PS: I should probably mention here that I really liked the book and highly recommend it.

UPDATE (2011/01/27): The new version arrived on my Kindle some time last night.
